Victoria Day

Happy first long weekend of spring/summer 2015!!  It seems likes we have been waiting for forever for the nice weather to arrive so  hopefully the weather cooperates so we can all get out and have fun with our families.  This weekend there are many events taking place across Ontario including fireworks, festivals and spring celebrations.  You can always visit a local Amusement Park or Zoo as well for some family fun. Whatever you do, have fun and keep safe!

Spring is in the air and that means that fresh produce and local items will be available at Farmers Markets near you.  Many are already open or opening soon.  Check for a  Farmer’s Markets near you!

Ontario Drive-ins

It’s drive-in season in Ontario!  Having a night out with the family to a local drive-in can be so much fun and friendly on the budget

Tulip Festival – The Canadian Tulip Festival is the largest of its kind in the world, attracting some 600,000 visitors annually.  The festival’s mandate is to preserve this heritage and celebrate the tulip as a symbol of international friendship by engaging local organizers, volunteers, artists, performers, tourists and festival-goers in what has become an annual ritual of spring and one of Canada’s best loved and well-known cultural events.

Sheep Shearing Festival @ The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum –  For the occasion, visitors will be able to learn all about wool by participating in various activities and demonstrations. Visitors of all ages can attend sheep shearing, sheep herding with sheepdogs and sheepdog agility demonstrations, as well as meet some alpacas. They can also learn about carding, spinning, weaving and knitting, all important steps in the transformation of a raw fleece into wool. Visitors will enjoy watching the traditional craft of finger-weaving and participating in a quiz about fibres. We certainly must not forget Little Bo Peep, who still needs help finding her sheep!

Bike Works DIY @ Evergreen Brick Works – Our shop is open on weekends and holidays, so you can drop by to use our tools and keep your bike in tip-top shape. With skilled volunteers and staff on hand to give tips and advice, Bike Works offers the tools and knowledge you need to get riding all season long.

Guided Walks @ Rouge Park – Hit the trail with Rouge Park’s Guided Walks in our 5th year of adventure and discovery.  It’s April, and you know what that means… spring is here! Trees are budding! Birds are moving back in! Flowers are popping up! Frogs are calling! Don’t miss a thing! Open the door to outdoor fitness and nature exploration and join a walk with our friendly and fun volunteer leaders! You never know what we’ll see.

Hawkwatch Season – Beamer Memorial Conservation Area in Grimsby is Niagara’s best viewing location of the annual migration of birds of prey. Spectacular birds of prey (bald eagles, sharp-shinned and red tailed hawks and vultures) can be seen flying over the site during their spring migration. Best viewing times are March 1 through May 15 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on warm, sunny days, especially with winds ahead of a warm front.

Haliburton

Celebrate Victoria Day the Victorian Way @ Haliburton Highlands Museum – Join us to celebrate the way early settlers would have with games, treats, crafts and other fun activities for the whole family! We’ll also be re-opening historic Reid House, which was built in 1882, for the summer season, so make sure to stop by for a glimpse into our past!

Victoria Day Fireworks @ Dundas Driving Park – The Victoria Day Celebration is supported by the City of Hamilton and presented by The Dundas Valley Sunrise Rotary Club. This is a free event but the Rotary club would appreciate cash donations at the gate to help finance the club’s local and international service work. Snacks, soft drinks and glow sticks are available for purchase before the fireworks begin.
