Tobogganing … Free family fun!

Tobogganing hills in ontario

Toboggan

One of the funnest activities you can do in the Winter as a family is to go tobogganing. It costs no money, needs very little equipment and it’s hours of fun!  Go to a neighbourhood park or change it up by trying somewhere new.

The key to toboganning is finding a great hill.  Here is a good site www.tobogganhills.com where you can search for hills by location, add your favourite hills, add photos, comment on and rate hills and discuss various different sleds.

Some things to consider when going tobogganing
– Be sure to dress warmly and keep your skin covered as much as possible.
– Depending on hill size it is recommended that children wear helmets
– Pick a hill that it free of trees, away from water and far from roads and parking lots
– Be courteous to other tobogganers and teach your children to walk up the side
– Teach your children to sit properly on their knees or bottom
– Do not overload a sled
– HAVE FUN!

Grab your sled and hit the hills for a fun time with the family!

Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament Toronto #Review

Calling all Lords, Ladies and your little Prince and Princesses too!  If you are looking to do something out of the ordinary for family fun then I highly recommend Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament in Toronto, ON.

983727_659523220740101_218296181_n

While dining on your Medieval grub, you will be entertained by an interactive show displaying horsemanship, jousting, hand-to-hand combat until only one knight is left standing and declared the winner.

IMG_8724  IMG_8752  IMG_8750

The Show:

During the show you will be dazzled by the soaring bird of prey, the knights showing off their skills, the beautiful horses and the battle itself.  Each section cheers for a different knight, based not the colour of your crown.  The kids (and adults) thought it was great to cheer at the top of their lungs for our knight and boo the other knights as they galloped past us.  The knights compete in different competitions and are rewarded by the princesses with a flower which they will then present to a member of the audience.  My 6yr old daughter was overjoyed when she was chosen to receive a flower from our black and white knight.  We loved this show because of the great interaction and audience participation!

IMG_8733  IMG_8688  IMG_8729

The Royal Grub:

Each row in a section has a designated “wench” for the night that will serve up your royal grub.  My kids thought it was great that they were able to eat with their hands and loved all the creative names they used for what they placing on our plates.   We started off with some Dragon blood (Tomato bisque soup), followed by some baby dragon (chicken), Ribs, garlic bread, potato and a apple pastry to finish it all off!

Our wench was great and was especially attentive to the kids, which of course always makes a parent happy.  Be sure to bring some money to tip your wench at the end of the night because they seemed to be go go go all night long.

IMG_8756 IMG_8758 IMG_8754

Be sure to stick around after the show as the royal family and knights come out so you can meet them and take pictures with them.  The gift shop also has lots of cool and original keepsakes you can buy so you’ll definitely want to check it out

Earth Hour & Kids

Make this a time to teach your children about the importance of saving energy and being more environmentally conscious.  To learn more, go online to the Earth Hour website to teach them how to make a positive impact on the planet.  Not only can you teach them environmental responsibility but you can also have some great fun while doing it.  Give the kids some flashlights, light some candles and enjoy being unplugged together.

Fun things to do with your family during Earth Hour

Have a Campout – Although it’s still a wee bit chilly to be camping outside, who says you can’t do it right in your house.  Set up a tent in your basement, throw in some pillows and sleeping bags and have some pre-made smores to munch on.

Have a Dance Party – Fire up that battery powered radio or charged iPod and have some fun dancing in the dark.

Tell Jokes – Have everyone share some of their favourite jokes or grab a joke book from your library.  With little kids in the house I know that this could definitely go on for longer than an hour.

Make Shadow Puppets – See who can come up with the best shadow puppet.

Play Games – Make it a family game night by playing one of your family’s favourite boards games, cards or hide and seek in the dark sounds like fun!

Have a Picnic – Prepare the food ahead of time and lay out a blanket with candles around the room for a picnic.  Cheeses, crackers, meats, dips, and some sweets sounds good to me!

Go for a Walk – Why not get out for some exercise and fresh air while you check up on your neighbours to see how many people are participating in Earth Hour.

Eat Junk Food – If you can’t really see what you’re eating then it doesn’t count right?!  Have everyone’s favourite junk food or make your own sundaes and eat them by candlelight

Invite Friends Over – The more the merrier right?  Have your guests bring their favourite food/wine pairing and have some snacks for the kiddies and enjoy some time with friends
