Weekend Fun Guide (Aug. 2-5 2013)

Happy long weekend to you all!  This weekend you can hang with some pirates, enter a sandcastle building contest, enjoy some amazing musical talent or attend one of the many awesome festivals taking place across Ontario this weekend!  Whatever your plans… have a fun and safe weekend with your family!


There are some great family movies in theatres right now so why not take the family for a night out at a local drive-in?!   You can also check out what’s playing onSaturday morning at Cineplex theatres for their Family Favourites.  At 11:00am you can watch a movie for only $2.50!


Ontario Farmer’s Markets are in full swing bringing you the best and freshest produce around.  Support the Farmers of Ontario by shopping at your local farmer’s market this weekend!

Around Town this Weekend…


Kempenfest – With over 350 exhibits, midway, live entertainment, food and family fun, this is one Festival you won’t want to miss!!


Midnight Madness – Come out and enjoy this shop and play event!  Take a break from shopping and try out the giant hamster ball, try the sports challenge, watch the entertainment or grab some yummy eats.


Joseph Brant Day Festival – This all day event will include community exhibitors, a summer BBQ and refreshment stands, splash park for kids, fair-style games, crafts and hands-on activities, a treasure hunt adventure, artisans and vendors, the famous Brant Day Silent Auction and tons of other attractions.


Waterfront Festival – Fill your bellies at the Pancake Breakfast so you are ready for a day of silly fun including duck races, ice cream eating contest, belly flop contest, boat and tub races, kids activities and so much more!


Sandcastle Festival – Looking for a great day out with the family? Want to express your inner artist? Always wanted a beach front property? You can find all of this in a beautiful setting right on Lake Ontario! Cobourg is known for it’s breathtaking waterfront and what better way to experience it then with a friendly little competition.  Families, businesses, adults and youth may enter to create their own sculptures or castles and win great prizes!


Village Beach Party @ Blue Mountain – It’s the summer’s hottest party for all ages – featuring a Bob Marley Tribute Show, Calypso music, Live Music, Yoga, hikes, face painting, movie under the stars and family fireworks by the Mill Pond.

Chalk Festival – There will be 16 artists that will be working all day Saturday and Sunday to complete their work of art while competing for awards. Come experience this great form of art while the artists transform the concrete pad in Victoria Park into an outdoor gallery


Highland Games – Come witness an outstanding display of music, dance, sports, fiddling, pageantry, and tradition. There will be more than 60 pipe bands, more than 200 dancers and giants that hurl telephone pole-sized cabers and 50 pound iron hammers around the infield. It is a memorable and incredible event.


Canalfest – Come out for a fun family weekend filled with food, kids acitvities, live music, craft show, silent auction, animals and canoe rides.


Pirate Festival – Whether ye be young or old, or just looking for a good time with your mates, the Pirate Festival offers fun for all! Children will enjoy stories, crafts, our Pirate Ship and a wide variety of shows designed to be family friendly. Adults will find much to entertain them  live music, vending marketplace, the Mud show, and a Saturday Night Captain’s Keg for those looking for an entertaining night in our tavern. The Circus is Coming to Town!!

Niagara Falls

Fireworks over the Falls – Canada’s longest-running fireworks series is underway with fireworks every Friday, Sunday, and holiday until September 1, preceded by the popular Coca Cola Concert Series on the Victoria Park Stage. The best views are in Queen Victoria Park overlooking Niagara Falls.

Huron Fringe Birding Festival – 15th annual festival takes its name from the migration corridor along the Bruce Peninsula. At MacGregor Point Provincial Park, near Port Elgin.

St. Catherines

Niagara Vegfest – An annual event that takes place in downtown St. Catharines, Ontario, and is part of the growing “VegFest” movement in North America. Unionville Festival – Come play at the Unionville Festival this weekend!  Main Street Unionville will burst with energy and come alive with music, people, and unique shopping opportunities… more so than any other weekend of the year.


Waterloo Air Show –  If you love aviation, this is the show for you! Watch the dazzling spectacle above your head as planes rush by and dazzle the crowds.  Check out the Static Display, get up close to aircraft, talk to pilots, play kid-friendly activities and lock-in your spot on the viewing field.  This year they are introducing Food Truck Alley where at least a dozen gourmet food trucks will be serving a variety of fare from Britain, the Islands, Mexico, Alabama and Quebec!


Bicycle Rodeo @ Niagara Safety Village- For Ages 6-12 years old. Practice and develop skills on the rodeo course and get your bike and helmet checked. All participants must bring their own bike and helmet. Fee is $2.00 per child.


Art in the Park – During the Art in the Park you will enjoy viewing over 275 artists and artisans from around Ontario, Quebec and the State of Michigan who have come to display and retail their wares. With the addition of our Friday night launch party AIP has moved a higher class of engaging art and entertainment. Art in the Park is the only 360 degree family event in Essex County where the whole family can enjoy many elements or artisitc pleasures. We even have something for the kids.

Weekend Fun Guide (May 10-12 2013)

25th Annual M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day

On May 11th, 2013, Canadians can help cook up a cure!  Visit any M&M Meat Shops location across Canada to support the Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC). M&M Meat Shops franchisees, staff and thousands of volunteers from coast-to-coast will grill hamburgers and hot dogs to meet the 2013 fundraising goal of $1.3 million. Enjoy a hamburger or hot dog, a drink and a bag of chips for a minimum donation of only $3.00. All proceeds go directly to the CCFC to cure Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and improve the lives of children and adults affected by these chronic diseases.

Around Town this Weekend…


Kids Fishing Derby – Local children will be grabbing their fishing gear for the annual Kids Fishing Derby at Bloomfield Mill Pond Park on Saturday, May 11th.  This much-anticipated event will take place from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Open to kids 12 and under, the derby will feature prizes for the longest and shortest fish, as well as for the most fish caught and the strangest catch. The cost to participate is $2. A barbeque lunch is available for a nominal fee. All participants must be accompanied by an adult.


Mother’s Day Tea & Springtime Celebration @ At Ireland House at Oakridge Farm! – A spring celebration with a Mother’s Day Heritage Tea, live musical entertainment, special guests, re-enactors and a surprise royal host! Not to be missed!  Tickets for tea must be purchased in advance.


International Migratory Bird Day Celebration @ Mountsberg – The theme for this year’s celebration is bird life cycles, looking at all aspects of a migratory birds’ life, from migration to breeding to nesting and to raising young.  Guided bird watching sessions will take place throughout each day and if you are up to it there will be the challenging Bird Migration Game.


Ruthven’s for the Birds – Join us for International Migratory Bird Day to celebrate our feathered friends! Meet at the banding lab at 8 am (or thereafter) and shadow the expert bird banders as they net and band neotropical migrant birds. Don’t miss the opportunity to see birds up close! Novice birders are welcome. Tours of the mansion will be available at 11 am and 12 noon. Admission by donation.


Tough Mudder @ Mount St Louis Moonstone – More than 10,000 participants are expected over 2 days at Mount St Louis Moonstone this weekend to endure, “Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet”.  Tough Mudder is an obstacle course challenge designed to test all around strength, stamina and mental grit but most of all camaraderie. Tough Mudder is not about finish times, it is about completing a challenge.  Although registration is now closed, if you have ever thought of doing this event why don’t you go check it out as a spectator so you can get prepared for the Tough Mudder in the Fall!!


Greensville Optimists 9th Kids Fishing Derby @ Christie Lake Conservation Area – Tagged fish will be worth $50 each, and kids will be given an opportunity to win a Hamilton Conservation  Authority Family Prize Package.  The event runs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. All kids must register at the Conservation Area on the day of the event to participate.  Registration does not include regular admission.

Mother’s Day at Colasanti’s – Celebrate Mother’s Day at Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens. The zoo is open from 8am to 6pm, with Colasanti’s famous Sunday Brunch from 9am to 2pm. Reservations are recommended! The buffet includes two hot buffet bars, a full salad bar, an extended dessert table, peach drink and coffee.  All day ride passes are available. Wildflower walk for Mom @ Crawford Lake Conservation Area – The Wildflower Walk for Mom begins with a spring slideshow followed by a guided walk through park woodlands. On the hike, a knowledgeable guide will explain the natural and cultural history of the area wildflowers. Mom can then relax with a serving of Nature’s Tea.

Migratory Bird Day @ Toronto Zoo – This year’s theme is “Life Cycles of Migratory Birds: Conservation Across the Americas” This theme addresses the need for conservation throughout all aspects of their life cycle, from nesting to migration to breeding and raising young. One and two hour guided bird watching tours of the Rouge Valley and around the Zoo site will be conducted on the hour until noon.
