5 Reasons Why you Should Send Your Child to Camp this Summer

img_7913

For the past 5 years we have sent our kids to Summer Camp at Ontario Pioneer Camp in Port Sydney, Ontario.

Some of our friends think we’re a little bit nuts to just drop our kids off 3 hours from home and leave them there for a week to “fend for themselves”.  Others think it’s a fabulous experience for the kids and I agree.

Here is why we send our kids to camp every Summer and think you should too:

1.  Create Independence – Being away from home can’t help but foster independence in your child.  Our son left for camp his first year as a shy boy and came back a confident and social kid that could’t wait to go back to school.

img_5643

2.  Let them experience new things – Summer camp gives a great variety of new experiences for your child.  From archery and high ropes to group campfires and trying new foods.  At camp, there is no lack of new experiences year after year

img_7080

3.  Make great Summer memories – The memories they will make will be so special and endless.  Believe it or not, this rock has special memories for my son as this is where he would go his first year to reflect on his day and think of home.  For the past 5 years he makes a point of visiting “his rock” when at camp.  There are SO many other memories that he adds to his list year after year

IMG_1056

4. Step outside their confort zone – Being away from home is already out of their comfort zone but sleeping in a cabin with no solid walls takes that a little further.  But guess what?  The kids think it’s a blast!!!

5.  Make friends that will last a lifetime – Each year the kids will make new friends and catch up with the ones that they met the years before.  One of the best things is the great counsellors they meet and help make their week at camp awesome.

BONUS – A week without KIDS!!  Kinda like a week-long date night!!

My kids are leaving ME for a week at Ontario Pioneer Camp

Ontario Pioneer Camp

Ontario Pioneer Camp

Three years ago we dropped our then 7 year old off at Ontario Pioneer Camp for a week and it was SO hard. Despite my worries, his week was full of fun, friends and adventures and he didn’t want to leave.  You can read about that adventure here. Fast forward to now and we are sending our daughter who is 7 for her first sleep away camp experience and I’m finding it even harder.

IMG_3590

My girlfriends are all asking what I’ll do without the kids for a full week and I am honestly at a loss.  Clean my house? Read a book?  Miss them the like crazy… Check!

In theory it sounds blissful to have a quiet house but call me crazy because I love the sound of them being home, messing up the house and them talking my ear off.

Like I did with my son 3 years ago, I worry that my daughter will get homesick and feel like we abandoned her even though her big brother is there if she needs him. And then I found this amongst her drawings today…
IMG_3541

“I am so excited to go to camp this year.  I have never been before.

I am excited because I get to meet new friends and try new things.

I am scared that I’m going to miss my family.

But I know i’m going to have a great time.”

What this tells me is that she is more mature than I give her credit for. She is okay with acknowledging that she will will miss her parents but also knows that there is a ton of fun to be had. Thankfully her big brother will be there as a friendly face and there to give her a big hug if she needs one.  To help alleviate the homesickness we will have ourselves and friends email letters to her, send a picture book with little messages and send along comforts from home like her giant panda stuffie, a fave book and really whatever else she wants.  Look out OPC we may be bringing her with 4 suitcases!  lol

In the end I know that as a Mommy I worry more than she does and I know in my heart of hearts that she is going to have a fantastic time because Ontario Pioneer Camp ROCKS.  I can’t wait for all the chitter chatter on the way home when I hear all about the fun memories that were made.

Why my Kids Love Ontario Pioneer Camp

Ontario Pioneer Camp

It’s always fun to get a kid’s perspective on things, so I thought it would be fun to get my 5 year old daughter and 7 year old son‘s feedback on what they liked about Ontario Pioneer Camp (OPC) in Haliburton.  Also be sure to read our full retell of our awesome weekend at OPC as a family here!

Check out all the great camps offered for younger children at Ontario Pioneer Camp  here

Why were you excited to go to OPC?

I was excited because I really wanted to meet new friends

I really wanted to go so I could try archery

What did you think when you first arrived at OPC?

I was really happy we were there even though I was tired from the long car ride.  The show at the Crow‘s Nest was cool and so was the campfire with s’mores

I thought that it was going to be fun! I saw that there were cabins and it was really big.

What was your room like?

The room was big and had bunk beds.  I slept on the bottom so I wouldn’t fall out. The bathroom had a shower

Our room was cozy.  It had bunk beds and a desk. Oh and we all got camp shirts!

IMG_7106

What your favourite part of the shows?

The Crow’s Nest is a cool building for shows.  I like the 3 Little Pigs and all the camp councillors being funny.

The camp councillors acting silly…throwing balls in each others faces and dumping water on each other.  The songs they taught us were fun.

What was your favourite thing you ate?

Ice cream sundaes

Pancakes

Note from Mom…The food was awesome and healthy despite their faves! 😉

It was good.  I think I was really good at it

It was awesome because you get to use a bow and arrow and i’ve always wanted to do that.

They were cool

IMG_7044

Low Ropes  Course

It was hard but fun

Epic obstacle course

IMG_7080

Rock Climbing Wall

It was really easy because they put gear on you and they helped pull me up

I thought it was really high but really cool.

IMG_7059

Canoeing in the war canoes across Clearwater Lake

It was really peaceful and quiet

Pretty long and there were a LOT of people in one canoe.

1003253_522632767803372_1124010163_n

Fire Blazers game

That was my favourite part because they had water balloons

It was really fun.  Even the parents had fun

Going down the big water slide at the Girl’s camp

It was really fast and I had no goggles on so I got water in my eyes.  It was fun but cold

The water looked too cold for me so I just watched

What was your favourite activity?

I really liked doing the rock climbing and crafts

Archery

Were the campfires fun?

Thumbs up!  Good for roasting marshmallows and I loved the campfire stories

S’mores were yummy.  I thought it was cool that they lit the big fire on the beach by using a flaming arrow

IMG_7033

What did you like about the Beach area?

We could swim and build sand castles.  There were canoes and they set fire works off from a canoe at night time.

There was beach volleyball, canoes you could ride in and they had tons of life jackets.

Can you tell me about the Camp Staff…

They were all lots of fun.  Stitch did Gangnum style on stage cause he loved camp so much.  They did a funny show the first night.  They were so nice

They are all funny.  They were kind because you could tell they liked kids a lot.

YEP…a little bit

No not that much

Note from Mom…Both were asleep the minute their heads hit the pillow!

I had a fun time and made new friends

There was so much to do and lots of outside time.  I also liked trying new things

Thank you for making my first camp experience so much fun!

Thank you all for being so much fun.  I LOVE camp!

What would you like other kids to know about OPC?

You should go there because it is a lovely place. When they ring the big bell you have to come running because it means it’s time to eat or change activities.

OPC is a wonderful place because it has nice staff, you can make new friends and it’s a lot of fun

IMG_7079

Would you like to go to OPC as a camper?  Why?
