Maple Leaf Monster Jam #Review

NortherNightmare_1

We were excited to be invited to Maple Leaf Monster Jam at Rogers Centre last evening.  To be honest, as we had never been, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  My son isn’t a rough and tough kinda boy but he was super pumped to go to the show.  With his ear protection on he was ready to experience his very first (and definitely not his last) Monster Jam Show!

IMG_8525

Let the noise, cheering, revving engines and flip overs beginnnnnnnn…

IMG_8514 IMG_8493

IMG_8512 IMG_8502

The show begins with all the trucks doing laps to “show off” their power and style. It was awesome to see the actual size of the trucks and the amazing looks. The show is then broken down into two parts, races and freestyle.   Although the race part gets you excited and is fun to watch,  I would say the highlight of the show is the freestyle part.  This is where the trucks get to do what they want.  It was amazing to see how high they could jump and how long such a huge truck could hold a wheelie.  Crashes were spectacular but thankfully there were no injuries due to the high safety standards.    In between the Monster Trucks, quads came out to race for their team which was US vs. Canada.  Canada won 2 out of 3!!

IMG_8496 IMG_8521

IMG_8506 IMG_8514

What we loved, other than the obvious excitement, was that the show was very interactive from the drivers running up into the stands for photo ops to cheering for your favourite truck to free t-shirts being launched into the crowd.  All in all it was a super fun experience and one that we would definitely recommend and do again.

My 8 year old’s take on the show

What were you expecting when you heard we were going to Monster Jam and were you excited?

I was expecting a lot of crashing.  I was very excited because I had never been

What surprised you about Monster Jam?

What surprised me was that there so many broken trucks by the end of the show.

What was your favourite part of the show?

My favourite part of the show was seeing Son-uva Digger winning the race

What was your favourite truck?

Son-uva Digger was because he is the son of Grave Digger.  Well and I also liked the bus, Higher Education, and wish my school bus looked like that!

What would you want other kids to know about Monster Jam?

The whole show is fun and the trucks are awesome.  It’s really loud and Quad wars is really cool!

Helpful info – As it can be quite loud during the show and children’s ears can be more sensitive to the noise level, ear plugs and headphones can be purchased at a merchandise stand at the show or you can also bring your own.

Disney on Ice Princesses & Heroes – Family Entertainment Review

Prince-Philip-battles-Maleficent

Have a little princess or wee prince in your family?  Then you need to go see Disney on Ice Princesses & Heroes!  We took our 8 and 6 year old to see the show and they loved it!  We have been in years past and Feld Entertainment never ceases to impress us year after year.

The choreography, set design, and costumes are fantastic!  This year’s show is based on different fairytales and the starring princesses and their heroes along side them.  Of course no Disney show would be complete with Mickey and Minnie who were our MCs for the event.  Tinkerbell also made her appearance to kick off the show and in between stories to magically change the scenery and story with her wand.

Disney on Ice - Vacationing with Kids  Disney on Ice - Vacationing with Kids

The show kicks off with Aladdin being chased through the market and meeting his princess Jasmine.  The wonderful skating in this act left us knowing that the show was going to be a good one.

Disney on Ice - Vacationing with Kids Disney on Ice - Vacationing with Kids

Hi Ho, Hi Ho it’s off to work we go.  Snow White and her prince joined the show with 7 of the cutest sidekicks…the 7 dwarfs.  I must say that Dopey was as cute as can be and pretty funny too.

Disney on Ice - Vacationing with Kids Disney on Ice - Vacationing with Kids

Beauty and the Beast is one of the faves in our house and this part of the show did not let us down.  The choreographing and costumes for “Be Our Guest” was fantastic!

Disney on Ice - Vacationing with Kids

Of course everyone’s favourite mermaid was along for the show with her faithful friend flounder, her sisters, Sebastian and King Tritan himself.  The story wouldn’t be complete without Ursula and I must say that her costume was phenomenal.

Prince-Philip-battles-Maleficent

Hands down my son said the best part of the show was Sleeping Beauty when Princess Phillip fought the fire breathing (yes real fire) dragon to fight for his princess.  “It was SO cool!”

Cinderella-wishes-300x236

Probably the most famous princess of all, Cinderella, appeared in her carriage and danced her night away with her prince with amazing lifts and skating.

Last but not least we were dazzled by Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder taking the ice

Disney on Ice is a great family tradition and a show not to be missed!

Holy Carp! Ross Petty’s The Little Mermaid is a must-sea show this Holiday Season

Ross Petty's The Little Mermaid ticket giveaway

Ross Petty's The Little Mermaid ticket giveaway

Last week we were invited to the opening night of Ross Petty’s The Little Mermaid.  My sister has raved about these productions for years and I do trust her opinion but we had never been as I thought the kids were too young.  I was so excited when I told my family we were going and expected the same from them.  My 6 yr old daughter was thrilled, my 8 yr old son groaned cause he didn’t want to go to a “girl” show and my husband, well he knew he was coming no matter what and if he was lucky he might get to see some mermaids in bikini tops!

Well let me tell you, this show was not what any of us were expecting … It was FANTASTIC!!

If you think you are going to see a stage show of the popular movie Little Mermaid…think again.  Ross Petty’s Little Mermaid is not the like the fairy tale version everyone is used too.  This show is pee your pants funny, hip, modern and all around good family entertainment.  We loved the interactiveness of the show.  It had my family booing the villains, cheering for the good guys and laughing until our cheeks hurt.  Complete with Rob Ford Jokes, references to Miley Cyrus and current hit songs … how could this not be funny and entertaining?

Quick synopsis of the show… Angel (Chilina Kennedy), your “little mermaid”  lives at the bottom of the Toronto Harbour with her sisters and flamboyant Aunt Plumbum (played by Dan Chameroy who is no rookie to Petty’s productions) . Angel who has no interest in material human things is more concerned with the dumping of trash and pollution into the waters.  On her 18th Birthday she is allowed to go to the surface where she saves Adam (Marc Devigne) and falls in love with him.  Word gets around that an evil wanna be Donald Trump, Ogopogo (Petty) wants to build a casino and entertainment complex in the harbour.  Angel, her sisters, Plumbum and environmental activist Adam set out to foil Ogopogo’s plans and save the harbour.  Sooo do they save the harbour?? Well you’ll have to go see the show to see how it all turns out!

The cast of the show was brilliant.  The singing voices of Angel and Adam were beautiful.  The hilarious antics of Carl the ClownFish (Reid Janisse who is also the creative writer…applause) Sponge Bill Triangle Pants and Shelly the Shrimp had us in hysterics.  Ross Petty himself plays the villain that everyone loves to hate, Ogopogo.  With his sexy sidekick Eris at his side, these two played an awesome evil duo. This show would not have been complete without the over the top and fantastic Plumbum.  Whether they were a main character or a trusty side-kick, the entire cast did a phenomenal job and the standing ovation at the end and the smiles on everyone’s faces were proof of that.

Closing Remarks from Ross Petty himself (well the jist of it anyhow): “It is a pleasure to be here.  We have an extraordinary creative team and script writer.  It is a pleasure for me to be on stage with these incredibly talented people.  Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Like us on Twitter…or however it goes”

Ross Petty's The Little Mermaid

My opinion… This production was cleverly put together with the entertainment of the entire family in mind.  There is a fantastically fun story line for everyone to enjoy, music and references that the kids can relate to (What does a darn fox say anyhow?), over the kid’s heads humour for the parents and an all around wonderfully crafted show.  A must-sea family show this Holiday season!  Trust me, you will love it!!  Ross Petty’s The Little Mermaid IS Ontario’s O-FISH-AL Family Musical

Here’s the feedback from my kiddos after the show:

Daughter (6): “When I grow up I hope Ross Petty is still alive because I am going to dance and sing in his show one day”

Fave Character: Angel – She can roller-skate and sing so beautifully

Fave Part of the Show: When the mermaids sang “Mermaids Like Us” (The Mermaid version of Kelly Clarkson’s “People Like Us”)

Funniest Part: Everything Sponge Bill Triangle Pants did.

What do you want to tell people about the show: “Go See the Ross Petty Show and be sure to boooo really loudly when Ogopogo (that’s Ross Petty by the way) comes out”

How many thumbs up:  2 enthusiastic ones!

Son (8):  “That was the best show i’ve ever seen and i’ve seen a LOT of shows in my eight years”

Fave Character: Definitely Sponge Bill Triangle Pants.  He was soooo funny.  Well and he’s Sponge Bob’s cousin so I have to like him

Fave Part of the Show: When they did “What Does the Fox Say”.  It’s cool that the had recent stuff in the show

Funniest Part:  Mommy I laughed so hard my cheeks hurt.  The whole show was funny but I think the funniest part was…hmmmm…yah the whole thing

What do you want to tell people about the show: It’s a very funny, non classic version of the Dalt Wisney movie and you HAVE to go see it!

How many thumbs up: 2 and a pinky!

THE LITTLE MERMAID

Ontario’s O-FISH-AL Family Musical!

Opening Night: Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at 7pm

For nearly over 20 years, generations of families have flocked to the Elgin Theatre for Ross Petty Productions’ annual holiday pantomimes, one of the longest-standing theatrical traditions in Ontario. With their 18th consecutive fractured fairy tale ahead of them, Ross Petty Productions has Toronto awash with excitement to catch THE LITTLE MERMAID live on stage from November 22, 2013 – January 4, 2014, a must-sea this holiday season.

The centuries-old tradition of British pantomime is a boisterously fun form of musical comedy for the entire family and this year, Ross Petty and his creative team are exploring the underwater world of Hans Christian Andersen in a story where anyFIN goes!

This year’s leading lady is musical theatre powerhouse, Chilina Kennedy. With the help of a motley crew of aquatic friends, the title character’s love-riddled quest to save the Toronto harbour is also aided by Dan Chameroy’s sea-lacious Dame Plumbum, and Marc Devigne, Canadian Idol season one finalist, starring opposite Kennedy as the buoy of her dreams

Second City funnyman Reid Janisse, who made his panto debut last year as Ham (the porcine Don Cherry), returns as Carl the Clown Fish while also penning the O-FISH-AL script. Petty himself is trading in his spanks for scales to play Ogopogo the evil sea wizard, radiant redhead Jordan Clark, winner of So You Think You Can Dance Canada season four, and star of Family Channel’s The Next Step TV series, will make her panto debut as Ogopogo’s slithery assistant, while fan-favourite Eddie Glen returns as Petty’s reluctant sidekick.

Shorely, Ross Petty’s interpretation of Canada’s mythical lake creature will bring a tsunami of boos and hisses at this year’s family-friendly fractured holiday entertainment!

THE LITTLE MERMAID

Ontario’s O-FISH-AL Family Musical!

966303_10151629605948290_460537064_o

Over 18 years, Ross Petty has created one of the longest-standing theatrical traditions in Ontario with his annual holiday pantomime, a truly unique creation that brings Canadian stars together on stage for a remarkable run of theatrical fun. Marking his 18th consecutive production at the Elgin Theatre, Ross Petty Productions has Toronto awash with excitement to catch THE LITTLE MERMAID live on stage from November 22, 2013 – January 4, 2014, a must-sea this holiday season!

Leaving behind the Brothers Grimm to enter Hans Christian Andersen territory, Petty and his team mark their first-ever foray into the fishy fairy tale, and in true Petty fashion, anyFIN goes!

Currently starring as the title role in Evangeline at The Charlottetown Festival, and most recently seen on Broadway as Mary Magdalene in the Stratford-to-Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar, musical theatre power house Chilina Kennedy will star as the Little Mermaid. With an aquatic collection of friends by her side, the title character’s quest for true love and happiness is aided by Dan Chameroy’s sea-lacious Dame Plumbum, returning to the Elgin stage with his perennial persona as the Little Mermaid’s aunt. Starring opposite Kennedy as the handsome Prince, and the buoy of her dreams, is actor and Canadian Idol season one finalist, Marc Devigne.

Second City funnyman Reid Janisse, whose wit, charm, and delivery commanded the room in last year’s production of Snow White, returns to star in this year’s show while also penning the O-FISH-AL script. Petty himself is trading in his spanks for scales to play Ogopogo the evil sea wizard, based on Canada’s own cryptid lake monster. Radiant redhead Jordan Clark, winner of So You Think You Can Dance Canada season four, and star of Family Channel’s The Next Step TV series, will make her panto debut as Ogopogo’s slithery assistant, while fan-favourite Eddie Glen returns as Petty’s reluctant sidekick.

Disney on Ice Rockin’ Ever After – Show Review

D33_300x220

Last night we took our 5 yr old daughter and 7 yr old son to Feld Entertainment’s Disney on Ice Rockin’ Ever After at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.  WOW is all I can say!  We have taken our kids to lots of live shows but I must say this was by far one of my faves…oh and the kids loved it too!!  If you are toying with the idea of taking in this show before it leaves on Sunday, don’t wait and just buy your tickets because you do not want to miss it.  You can use code COMAV to save up to $6 on tickets at Ticketmaster.ca

IMG_6875

My overall review of the show is that the choreography, musical numbers, awesome figuring skating, costumes and set design is simply awesome! There is nothing I can honestly say that disappointed us.   The four main stories they present are Little Mermaid, Rapunzel, Brave and Beauty and the Beast.  My 5 yr old put it best when she said that each show they presented was like the movie in fast forward but they acted out all the best parts.  Even if you had never seen any of the movies you will totally get the story line.  My son who is 7 was totally sceptical about going to what he referred to as a “princess show” but let me tell you that he was the one that laughed the hardest and clapped the loudest.

IMG_7001

As the lights went down and the crowd cheered the excitement was just beginning!!  Your hosts for the show are the ever loveable Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy.  They are present throughout the evening as they introduce characters and help tell the stories. The show starts off with some musical numbers where the colourfully dressed performers ice dance to songs like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, “Vogue” and “We Got the Beat”, so right from the beginning they had the parents captivated.   As always, they throw in some humour which had the young and old(er) laughing in their seats.  A quick but humorous visit from Pinnochio and the evil step sisters and the show is underway.

Little Mermaid was the first movie they acted out and to be honest if that had been it for the show, I would have been equally amazed.  They performed all the favorite songs from the movie like “Part of Your World” and “Under the Sea” and included some fave characters like Flounder, Sebastian and of course Prince Eric.  The best part of this segment is how they played out Ariel’s transformation to human as she spun above the ice doing some acrobatics while the crowd cheered.   This is where you really began to notice the amazing costume designs and I have to say that the Ursula costume was great!  In the end of course, the crowd was thrilled when Ariel ended up with Prince Eric.

IMG_6902  IMG_6894  IMG_6895  IMG_6906

IMG_6898  IMG_6903

Rapunzel is one of the fave movies in our house and this portrayal reminded me why.  Rapunzel’s costume was awesome! The segment begins with the funny rowdy locals and are joined by Rapunzel and her ally Flynn for a fun adventure of comedy, song and fantastic skating footwork.  Ever seen a horse on skates?  Well, you will during this segment as the always funny Maximus hits the ice.  The hands down best part of Rapunzel was when they released the lanterns!!

IMG_6919  IMG_6933  IMG_6936

IMG_6932  IMG_6927  IMG_6911

After a quick intermission, Brave was next on the night’s agenda. My daughter has seen Brave many times but for some reason I have to admit I have never seen it.  After seeing the Disney on Ice presentation of it, I can’t wait to see it.  The Scottish music, storyline and characters were great.   The special effects had the crowd cheering as the suitors vied for Merida’s hand in marriage.  Merida’s brothers were absolutely funny and highly entertaining.  My son loved how they teased her by making faces at her, pulling her hair and flipping up her skirt like all little brothers do.

IMG_6952 IMG_6950 IMG_6944 IMG_6951

IMG_6943  IMG_6940

Who doesn’t love the story of Beauty and the Beast?  Again, they told the story fantastically through Gaston, Belle and the Beast.  I couldn’t take my eyes off the Beast as his mannerism were hilarious and his costume was SO well done.  Enjoy as the ice is filled with colourful skaters and breathtaking scenery as they entertain you with “Be Our Guest” with some of your favourite characters like Belle, Lumière, Mrs. Potts, Chip and the other Enchanted Objects.  The end scene when Gaston and the Beast fight for Belle will have you on the edge of your seat. The show comes to and end and there are smiles everywhere!!

IMG_6976  IMG_6991  IMG_6974

IMG_6955 IMG_6985 IMG_6957 IMG_6987

Another little highlight which I think deserves a mention is the extra thought put into the snacks by Feld Entertainment.  After my daughter polished off her deliciously sticky and yummy cotton candy I was delighted to find a wet wipe in the bottom of the bag.  Let me say that it was a pleasant surprise and a much needed addition to the bag.  Yep, sometimes it’s the small things that can make you smile!

Don’t forget to bring some extra money for the souvenirs because as always there is no shortage of spinning, shiny, light up collectables …. you name it, your kids will be mesmerized and want one of everything.  Our kids settled on cotton candy that came with a tiara, popcorn in a collector bucket, boomerang and a Chip mug.

LEGO, LEGO Everywhere

IMG_6833

We were very excited to be invited to take part in the media preview for LEGOLAND Discovery Centre in Vaughan Mills last week which opens March 1st.  I have loved LEGO since I was a kid but now I get to re-live that through my kids.  My son is 7 and he is a huge LEGO fan.  From mini figures to his fave sets of Ninjago and everything in between, he can spend hours upon hours building and using his imagination.  My daughter is 5 and being the girlie girl that she is has totally taken to  LEGO friends.  So you can imagine the squeals of glee when I told them they could come to the preview with me.

IMG_6833

Both up and dressed at the crack of dawn, we were early for the event so it gave us a chance to check out the storefront.  This would have made them happy in itself as the store is great!  The decor is bright and colourful and has cool big figurines constructed all out of LEGO blocks.  We found sets that my son had been looking for, sets that my daughter hadn’t seen yet, super cool key Chains, wall of bricks and the list goes of on and on.  Shopping list for the Easter Bunny….Done!  It’s going to be a LEGO themed Easter at this house!

Our tour began as we entered the LEGO man cutout in the wall and into the LEGO factory where you learn through interactive play how raw plastic is turned into LEGO pieces. Here you can also weigh yourself to see how much you weigh in LEGO bricks. No…I will not reveal my number!

My 5 year old daughter’s favourite thing came next…Kingdom Quest.  Hop in a chariot and grab your laser gun to get rid of the bad guys and save the princess!  Your score tallies up as you go so you can see who the ultimate victor in the family will be.  If you’re anything like our competitive family you’ll want to ride again and again.

Miniland is nothing short of amazing.  Check out the landmark buildings of Toronto as well as the wonders of Niagara Falls all made out of millions of pieces of LEGO.  Play a game of baseball at the Rogers Centre, hockey at the ACC or just marvel at the hours upon hours of work put into this area.

At this point we haven’t even made it into the main play area where even more fun with LEGO awaits us.  In this area you will find an area to build your own LEGO racer that you can race down 2 different tracks, check out the LEGO friends area, play in the LEGO Fire Academy and ride Merlin’s Apprentice.  Be sure to check out one of favourite things in this area, the Earthquake Tables.  Build a tower out of LEGO bricks and test it’s strength and integrity to see if it can withstand the shaking of an earthquake.

My 7 year old son’s hands-down favourite was the 4-D Movie Cinema where we watched a Clutch Powers Adventure.  Put on your cool glasses, sit back and watch in amazement as LEGO bricks, mini figures and everything else busts out of the screen at you.  Watching the kids in the theatre reaching out to try and grab the flying pieces was amusement in itself.

All this LEGO fun can make you hungry so be sure to stop by the Cafe for some eats to re-energize so you can do it all again!  Don’t worry the food is about the only thing not made out of LEGO!

How cool would it be for your child to have their Birthday Party hosted at LEGOland?  Yep, they host parties as well.
